Apple crack prevention measures

In recent years, some apple orchards in my country have experienced different levels of rust and microcracks on the surface of the young fruit with the lenticels as the center. The incidence of crack disease in some orchards has reached more than 40%, and the apples with crack disease have been completely lost. The commercial nature causes serious economic losses to fruit farmers. So how does apple cracking happen? How to prevent apple cracking? Let’s take a look.

1. Environmental factors. During the growth and development of apples, drought, high temperature, windy and sudden changes in the orchard environment are all direct causes of crackle disease. Winter irrigation has a significant effect on suppressing the occurrence of crack diseases. According to our investigation, the occurrence of winter irrigation in orchards is relatively mild.

2. Soil conditions. The soil nutrient conditions of the orchard are closely related to the occurrence of apple crackle disease. Studies have shown that shallow soil or lack of soil moisture in orchards will affect the absorption of nutrients by the root system, leading to the occurrence of crack disease. In orchards with high soil organic matter content and balanced nutrients, cracks rarely occur. In addition, adding potassium fertilizer to the soil can also help alleviate the occurrence of cracks. When the content of calcium and boron in the soil is insufficient, or the content of nitrogen is too high, apple cracking disease is aggravated. Under the conditions of long-term grass-growing orchards, due to the balance of soil nutrients and water supply, the cracking phenomenon is significantly lower than that of clear-farming orchards.

3. Cultivation conditions. Canopy canopy, poor ventilation and light transmission will aggravate cracks. In the canopy canopy area, due to poor lighting conditions, the peel cuticle is not fully developed and its elasticity is reduced. After a long period of drought, the cuticle is easily broken when encountering pre-harvest rainfall or high humidity in the orchard, which may induce cracks. During the investigation, we also found that the sun surface of the fruit is usually evenly colored with very few cracks, while the negative side of the fruit is very easy to crack.

For orchards with conditions for water management, try to irrigate them once in winter or early spring, and pay attention to irrigation during the fruit expansion period to maintain a stable soil water content to ensure balanced fruit growth. In places where water sources are poor, grass growing in orchards and water-saving irrigation techniques should be implemented. Such as drip irrigation with grass mulching, micro-spraying of growing grass, and spraying of new high-fat film on leaves to form a physical polymer film to reduce water evaporation and prevent pathogen infection.

Soil management attaches importance to the application of organic fertilizer and balanced fertilization in orchards. Spray boron fertilizer once during the flower bud period, and spray bagging-free film and foliar fertilizer before bagging in the young fruit period to improve fertilizer efficiency and the physical polymer film can also provide a healthy environment before bagging the fruit.

The incidence of comprehensively cultivated dwarf stock trees is significantly higher than that of arborized trees. In cultivation, dwarf trees should be deeply buried and pruned to rejuvenate the tree vigor. Use pesticides that are irritating to peel cells as little as possible during the young fruit period. When using pesticides, use the new high-lipid film together to increase the utilization of pesticide active ingredients and reduce the amount of pesticides. Picking leaves in time, turning fruits, and laying reflective film on the ground to supplement light, promote the healthy development of the peel. Optimize the tree shape, remove too many branches, open the light path between layers, reduce the low-light efficiency crown area, and create favorable conditions for the uniform coloring of the fruit.
