New bionic hand - use the camera to achieve accurate "grip"!

British developers say that technology enables bionic hands to respond automatically to certain objects.

According to doctors who are familiar with prosthetics, prosthetics have not changed much in the past 100 years. But a new bionic hand developed by Newcastle University may change that.

The new bionic hand is equipped with a camera that instantly captures the object in front of it as a picture and evaluates its shape and size, triggering a series of hand movements.

The new bionic hand project described this week in the Journal of Neuroengineering, led by biomedical engineers at Newcastle University, is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Kianoush Nazarpour, senior lecturer in biomedical engineering at Newcastle University, said in a statement: "Based on computer vision, we have developed a bionic hand that can respond automatically. In fact, it is like a real hand. By quick glance, The user can accurately reach for a cup or biscuit. He also believes that reactivity has always been one of the main obstacles to prosthetics. Many amputees' prostheses are very slow and cumbersome compared to healthy arms or legs.

The hand of "informed to know the information" can react without thinking. Today's prostheses are controlled by myoelectric signals (ie, electrical activity of muscles recorded from the surface of the skin of the residual limb).

Ghazal Ghazaei, the lead researcher of the study, showed that computer multi-target images can drive the new bionic hand to "grab" the action on different objects.

Ghazaei said in a statement: "We will show the computer an image of a stick, but not just a picture, but multiple images of the same stick at different angles and directions in different light, different backgrounds. Until the computer knows how to successfully pick it up in different situations."

It can be seen that the computer not only matches the image, it needs to learn to identify the object, and determines how the bionic hand successfully picks up the target object according to the object type.
